Lay-ed postponed

Needless to say, Radio Volta was not up on July 30. The next two shows shall remain unchanged and we'll post the reschedule dates.

The Reverend e-mailed responses to the faithful regarding bullshit bio book about the late Dr. Timothy Leary. The book was reviewed by an eqully appalling person, hence the response. The comments and article feedback below are most definitely items that are encouraged to the e-mailed, posted, etc. The Rushie types will obviously buy and love the book, but people who admired Dr. Leary deserve to know in advance the type of book a tabloid-type of writer cranked out.

content of the e-mailer to the Bookburners:

When checking out bio books about movement or counter-culture people, it is wise to get a sense of where the author is coming from. The Reverend has read so much bullshit about Abbie Hoffman, Dr. Timothy Leary and too many others. It is not only the Bush-worshippers and right-wing bozos who are the culprits. A recent large bio book about Leary was written by a guy whom the Reverend believes to belong at People Magazine TM. The author self-presents as one who is deeply interested in his subject. He and a reviewer at alternative news sites have offered their trashings with presentations of being brilliant hip insiders. Ironically, both seem to be as self-absorbed and ego-fueled as they perceived Leary to be. Most people who have positive views of Leary would agree that there was an enormous sense of ego, which contradicted his psychedelic 'destruction of the ego' trip. However, this book is a bashing and should not be perceived as a 'must-read' for people interested in Leary. It is so unworthy of purchase, it's making Ann Coulter's book seem less trashy.

The Reverend's feedback to a review of the mentioned book:

disinterested in a people mag bio book
Posted by: Reverend Bookburn on Jul 29, 2006

No one from any movement or counter-culture should be above criticism, but such a trashing, especially in these dark times, is useless. It has long seemed to be a tendency in progressive movements to be 'reaching out' by slamming subculture and underground music scene figures, similar to the way the Democratic Party kisses up to the religious right and dubya worshippers.

I recommend to interested parties to pick up better books about or by Dr. Leary. Actually, I'd love to see a biographical film.

Lay-ed this Sunday

We'll try this again... the Ken Lay Funeral Show - Everybody Gets Lay-ed is scheduled for this Sunday night. Last weekend, Radio Volta was down and this themed-show had to be postponed. Hopefully, Volta will be able to keep it up and continue streaming this Sunday. So far, there are no indicators of technical difficulties.

Being clergy, the Reverend consistently experiences miracles that can be shared with the Bookburners. A few days ago, it came like a vision and will become a themed-show in the near future. A large, ugly pick-up truck zoomed in front of the Reverend and proceeded to exhibit the driver's retard ribbon. It was black and expressed the view of the brilliant driver that he wanted the POWs and MIAs found. Needless to say, the Reverend with his direct line to the Masters of the Universe, proceeded to make that happen. So..even though it's been decades, the POW-MIAs are alive, alert and using Rush Limbaugh's leftover viagra. This will be detailed in the forthcoming themed-show: The Reverend Found The POW-MIAs.

The input for the forthcoming show about companies and services who scam, rip people off, or are otherwise repulsive, has been accumulating. We're going to shine a spotlight not only on the more obvious assholes (e.g. Exxon), but also on those who are more quietly manifesting their greed and sicknesses. So in addition to AOL, Curves, H & R Block, MBNA, Aetna and State Farm insurance companies, forever electronic auto-billing Hollywood Tans and scammers (the Reverend does not understand why anyone would want to be a part of those two anyway, but since people do give their money to such companies, they do not deserve to be ripped off), and countless others. Why do this theme? Because it is worthwhile to acknowledge all who screw up the world, whether large-scale or small. In addition to cutting through the crap of the corporate media, indies can have an impact on reversing the trends of over-passivity in this culture.

We've recently been visited by Pastor Whoremaster and will either have him as a live guest, or do a tribute to him if traveling to Philadelphia isn't viable for him. There's also forthcoming news about Nurse Ratchet, former live guest Diva Diville (November 30, 2003 show, available in the Audio Archives) and Lord Cheezus.

While searching for other older books for a future themed-shows, the Reverend revisited several must-reads some of which are linked below.

Again, we expect no technical difficulties on Sunday night, so it's expected that all Bookburners will be Lay-ed. The Limpdick Rushies Excellent Vacation show remains scheduled for August 6.

Dominican Republic Keeps Abortion Illegal in Cases of Rape or Incest

by Steven Ertelt Editor
July 25, 2006

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic ( -- Lawmakers in the Dominican Republic voted to keep the Central American nation's laws strongly pro-life by rejecting a proposal to legalize abortion in cases of rape or incest.

The vote comes at a time when abortion advocates are campaigning in numerous Hispanic countries seeking to reverse pro-life laws. After five hours of intense debate, the country's House of Representatives approved a new penal code for the country. Pro-abortion lawmakers sought to amend the code to allow abortions in cases
of rape or incest but they failed to persuade enough of their colleagues to support it. Representatives Minou Tavárez, Licelot Marte and Berenice Contreras put
forward the proposal and it received support from Noah Sterling Vásquez and Luis Jose González Sanchez.

Visit Zango on MySpace -- I Dare You
by Brandon Dimmel

As the popularity of MySpace continues to grow, so too do the number of predators crawling within its virtual borders.

Not too long ago, Infopackets columnist Chris Sabga wrote a story on the dangers for children and teenagers with MySpace accounts -- but recently, threats to pretty much anyone are becoming apparent. The most notable is Zango, the Spyware program that has established its own MySpace account and is thrusting .exe files at anyone silly or curious enough to drop in.

For the most part, MySpace has avoided Spyware invaders, including Direct Revenue, the massively spreading malware company yours truly recent discussed. However, Zango has made it through and constructs two types of profiles. One demands visitors download a special little toolbar signed to protect kids (but probably not your computer's registry), while the other launches a mischievous popup.

Saving Private Power:
The Hidden History of "The Good War"
Mickey Z.

Saving Private Power is the most provocative history of the "Good War" ever published. It questions the ultra-patriotic assumptions we have been taught since birth.
The U.S. did not enter WWII to end the Holocaust, to make the world a safer place, or to stop fascism. The opposite is true. The U.S. business class traded with Hitler and Mussolini up to and even during the war. Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh's public Hitlerphilia were symbolic of big business's admiration for Hitler's anticommunism.
Using techniques gleaned from modern advertising, the U.S. Office of War Information injected anti-Japanese bloodlust and hysteria into the population. When the U.S. killed 672,000 Japanese through indiscriminate bombing, even Secretary of War Henry Stimson wondered why "there has never been a protest over...such extraordinarily heavy loss of life. There is something wrong with a country where no one questions that."

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan and Tom Brokaw's The Greatest Generation are cashing in on the revived interest in World War II. But time's up for the trafficers of cheap nostalgia. The media elite have sold us the myth about the U.S.'s noble role in the "Good War" for too long and the facade is beginning to crack. The recent release of John Cornwell's Hitler's Pope is only the beginning. Saving Private Power digs deeper, to find the truth about the this war and the world it left in its wake.

online abridged version of Hitler's Pope:

Hitler's Pope
by John Cornwell

Long-buried Vatican files reveal a new and shocking indictment of World War II's Pope Plus XII: that in pursuit of absolute power he helped Adolf Hitler destroy German Catholic political opposition, betrayed the Jews of Europe, and sealed a deeply cynical pact with a 20th-century devil.

By John Cornwell

One evening several years ago when I was having dinner with a group of students, the topic of the papacy was broached, and the discussion quickly boiled over. A young woman asserted that Eugenio Pacelli, Pope Pius XII,
the Pope during World War II, had brought lasting shame on the Catholic Church by failing to denounce the Final Solution. A young man, a practicing Catholic, insisted that the case had never been proved.

Raised as a Catholic during the papacy of Pius XII - his picture gazed down from the wall of every classroom during my childhood - I was only too familiar with the allegation. It started in 1963 with a play by a young
German author named Rolf Hochhuth, Der Stellvertreter (The Deputy) which was staged on Broadway in 1964.

It depicted Pacelli as a ruthless cynic, interested more in the Vatican's stockholdings than in the fate of the Jews. Most Catholics dismissed Hochhuth's thesis as implausible, but the play sparked a controversy which
has raged to this day.

Disturbed by the anger brought out in that dinner altercation, and convinced, as I had always been, of Pius XII's innocence, I decided to write a new defense of his reputation for a younger generation. I believed that Pacelli's evident holiness was proof of his good faith. How could such a saintly pope have betrayed the Jews? But was it possible to find a new and conclusive approach to the issue? The arguments had so far focused mainly on his wartime conduct; however, Pacelli's Vatican career had
started 40 years earlier. It seemed to me that a proper investigation into Pacelli's record would require a more extensive chronicle than any attempted in the past. So I applied for access to archival material in the Vatican, reassuring those who had charge of crucial documents that I was on the side of my subject. Six years earlier, in a book entitled A Thief in the Night, I had defended the Vatican against charges that Pope John Paul I had been murdered by his own aides.

Two key officials granted me access to secret material: depositions under oath gathered 30 years ago to support the process for Pacelli's canonization, and the archive of the Vatican Secretariat of State, the foreign office of the Holy See. I also drew on German sources relating to Pacelli's activities in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s, including his dealings with Adolf Hitler in 1933. For months on end I ransacked Pacelli's files, which dated back to 1912, in a windowless dungeon beneath the Borgia Tower in Vatican City. Later I sat for several weeks in a dusty office in the Jesuit headquarters, close to St. Peter's Square in Rome, mulling over a thousand pages of transcribed testimony given under oath by those who had known Pacelli well during his lifetime, including his critics.

By the middle of 1997, 1 was in a state of moral shock. The material I had gathered amounted not to an exoneration but to an indictment more scandalous than Hochhuth's. The evidence was explosive. It showed for the
first time that Pacelli was patently, and by the proof of his own words, anti-Jewish. It revealed that he had helped Hitler to power and at the same time undermined potential Catholic resistance in Germany. It showed that he had implicitly denied and trivialized the Holocaust, despite having reliable knowledge of its true extent. And, worse, that he was a hypocrite, for after the war he had retrospectively taken undue credit for speaking out boldly against the Nazi persecution of the Jews.

Ken Lay's Funeral Show

On the next Reverend Is In show: Ken Lay's Funeral Show- Everybody Gets Lay-ed.

The late Lay was possibly the most destructive criminal on the entire continent. He and his fellow scammers at Enron destoyed the lives of thousands of employees and created false energy crises. Lay's links to the Bush crime family and the current regime are well-documented. Lay's trial was the beginning of a wave of exposure of corporate crime. After Enron, the world heard about WorldComm, Adelphia/ the Rigas crime family, Health South, Tyco and numerous others.

The corporate media has predictably placed it's face deep in Lay's dead asscrack. Lay has been commonly presented as a poor lovable lad who started from nothing and built himself a successful empire. Then poor Kenny boy got in a little trouble, but remained a deeply-faithful man of gawd. Though convicted of the greatest corporate crimes of the new century, he was a good ol' boy.

One could argue that it's morbid to do a celebration show of this nature. However, we're not only going to have fun, but raise the issues that should remain, such as: what is going to happen with all the money that was obtained while Lay & co. destroyed lives? Countless people have paid the price when a loved one passed away and had old debts or fines. If there are no consequences for the Lay estate in the wake of the crime of the new century, then even the pretense of justice is a joke.

We also want to be sure that issues such as corporate crime and corporate welfare remain on the frontburner. Since the largest empire in the world is governed by people who are in bed with such criminals, this is a logical concern.

However, we see no reason to bring anybody down. Since Lay provided one item of recent good news in these dark times, we want to party. So there will be plenty of good tunes, humor and hopefully we'll create the conditions in which all Bookburners can get Lay-ed!

Unfortunately, we also received news about the passing of Syd Barrett, the Founder of Pink Floyd. He was on the first release, plus a few other tracks, then issued solo recordings. Syd passed on July 7 at age 60. Even though it's unrelated to the theme, the next show will be dedicated to the memory of Syd. We'll play plenty of Syd tunes, plus covers/ tributes on the next two shows.

After Lay's funeral show, we'll do the Limpdick Rushie's Excellent Vacation show. Since Rush Limbaugh was stopped at an airport while returning from the Dominican Republic with a ill-prescribed bottle of viagra, the incident just begged to become a show theme. Rushie's show will be on Sunday, August 6. However, we don't want to strictly have laughs from Rushie's latest drug scandal, we want to see if we can stimulate a rise out of him.

More film reviews on the next show. If anyone is interested in Hippie John's review of Syrriana (it's long), it will be forwarded to you upon request.

There are multiple plugs in this posting as usual, especially books. Nothing ever mentioned on the air or at this site are ads. The Reverend accepts no funds from anyone and simply gives plugs to whatever is deemed worthwhile.

Pregnancy Centers Found to Give False Information on Abortion [excerpt]

By Marc Kaufman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, July 18, 2006; A08

Federally funded "pregnancy resource centers" are incorrectly telling women that abortion results in an increased risk of breast cancer, infertility and deep psychological trauma, a minority congressional report charged yesterday.

The report said that 20 of 23 federally funded centers contacted by staff investigators requesting information about an unintended pregnancy were told false or misleading information about the potential risks of an abortion.

The pregnancy resource centers, which are often affiliated with antiabortion religious groups, have received about $30 million in federal money since 2001, according to the report, requested by Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.). The report concluded that the exaggerations "may be effective in frightening pregnant teenagers and women and discouraging abortion. But it denies the teenagers and women vital health information, prevents them from making an informed decision, and is not an accepted public health practice."

Police in Eugene, Oregon have arrested a 21-year-old Army Specialist for refusing to return to fight in Iraq.

The soldier, Suzanne Swift, served in Iraq for a year but decided she could not return. And like thousands of other soldiers, she went AWOL. Not only did Swift feel the war lacked purpose, she said her superiors repeatedly sexually harassed her while serving in Iraq.

Swift remained AWOL until Sunday night when the Eugene police knocked on her mother's front door. She was arrested and taken to the county jail. Then she was transferred to Fort Lewis in Washington. She has been forced to return to her unit but is barred from leaving the base. No charges have been filed against her yet for deserting.

We speak with Suzanne Swift's mother, Sara Rich.

Religion, tolerance and gay parade

Fundamentalists across the religions have more in common with each other than they do with liberal members of their own religion. The gay parade's saga is the ultimate example.

Rabbi Jeremy Rosen, Daily Jews

In an uncharacteristic show of unanimity, the Jewish, Muslim and Christian clerics of Jerusalem have united in calling for a ban to a projected Gay Parade in the Holy City. This confirms an opinion I have long held, that
fundamentalists across the religions have more in common with each other than they do with liberal members of their own religion. There are many shared values
amongst fundamentalists of different religions, even though they each loudly proclaim that they are the sole purveyors of absolute Truth and all the others
are in error.

Letter: Dixie Chicks don't lie
To the Editor:

Mrs. Jacki Cook's criticism of the Dixie Chicks that appeared in a
recent column misses three of the most critical points in this
controversy. First, Natalie Mane has a perfect right to her opinion.
After all, she is a genuine Texan whereas George W. has always been a
pretend cowboy.

Second, people still like hearing the Dixie Chicks while relatively few
like to hear anything read-my-lips Jr. might care to say. Third, is the
veracity factor, the level of truthfulness from the Bush Administration
compared to the Dixie Chicks and those aficionados of good music versus
those who prefer the dog and pony show.

George W. is not a real Texan, never has been. Buying the Crawford
Chicken Ranch was Karl Roves idea to get curious George a set-up and
launching point into Texas politics. Even after becoming governor, he
was the same indecisive, self-centered dolt we currently see. There's
all this grand-standing now about putting National Guardsman on the
border to stem the flood of illegal immigration.

As Governor of Texas, Bush could have taken such steps years ago along
the Rio Grande; he didn't need anyone's permission. It wasn't done
because he and his cronies desire a steady stream of cheap immigrant
labor into Texas.

About a year ago, Dick Cheney stated before the national networks that
the insurgent attacks in Iraq were in their final throes.

When the war started there, George told us, "revenue from Iraqi oil
would pay for this war." George W. even lies to school kids. When
asked what his favorite childhood book was, he replied "The Very
Hungry Caterpillar."

Trouble is, this book wasn't published until curious George was in

The Dixie Chicks never lied to you or me. The Bush Administration on
the other hand seems to trot-out a new line of bull every couple of
weeks. They have a severe credibility problem.

Get real ladies, deadeye Dick and read-my-lips Jr. wouldn't know the
truth if it bit 'em in their ample hindquarters. They are fixated on
personal agendas detrimental to personal freedoms.

from PEN Weekly NewsBlast for Friday, July 14, 2006

Just how similar passages showed up in two history books is a tale of how the largely obscure $4 billion a year world of elementary and high school textbook publishing often works, for these passages were not written by the named authors but by one or more uncredited writers. And while it is rare that the same language is used in different books, it is common for noted scholars to give their names to elementary and high school texts, lending prestige and marketing power, while lesser known writers have a hand in the books and their frequent revisions. As editions pass, the names on the spine of a book may have only a distant or dated relation to the words between the covers, diluted with each successive edition, people in the industry, and even authors, say. In the case of the two history texts, the authors appeared mortified by the similarities and said they had had nothing to do with the changes. One of the most frequently used high school history texts is "Holt the American Nation," first published in 1950 as "Rise of the American Nation" and written by Lewis Paul Todd and Merle Curti. For each edition, the book appeared with new material, long after one author had died and the other was in a nursing home. Eventually, reports Diana Jean Schemo, the text was reissued as the work of another historian, Paul S. Boyer.

Res- Erection 2

Due to recent developments, some of the planned show themes will be delayed so that we can have more fun with current events. The next three shows shall be:

July 9: Res- Erection [also Dumbya's Un-Birthday Show]

July 23: Ken Lay's Funeral Show- Everybody Gets Lay-ed

August 6: Limpdick Rushie's Excellent Vacation

We were planning for the July 23 show to be Who Eats Rush Limbaugh's Ass. Since Rush decided to make his name useful for an even funnier theme, we'll have to re-think the original idea. The idea was to announce not only the obviously evil corporations and boycotted products, but also those that are true rip-offs or otherwise sucks. Since there has been debate from Bookburners about using the word 'sucks' as a negative, we thought Rush's ass would be a means of describing the worst of the world without belittling anyone's lifestyle. If anyone reading this is seriously into eating Rush Limbaugh's ass and is offended by the original theme title, we apologize. We seek a new title, as well as ideas and names of screwed up companies, products, services and people we tend to refer to as assholes. Since these kinds of horrors have consistently been sent in, it should be fairly easy to compile them together for a special show that puts a spotlight on such Rush smudgemarks.

The Reverend is preparing to announce a casting call for the forthcoming film project, Support The Droops. The vision is to feature an enormous flying bra, similar to a large blimp or the inflatable pig from a Pink Floyd video. Filmmakers, special effects people, stunt performers, creative minds, people with acting talent, and all other interested parties may contact the Reverend to announce their intent to Support The Droops.

Forthcoming themes: Big Holy Love/ Desperate Handmaids; Halliburton Gives Condi An Oilgasm; Petroleum Predators; Faith-Based Star Wars; Who Would Jesus Do?; SSS (Satanic Social Services) is Faith-Based; Recovery For Propagandists; Pubic Property; Democratic Party is Bush- Lite; White Illegal Aliens; Warning Labels for the Bible; Marketing Chocolate Contraception; More Perverted Stories from 'Moral Crusaders' (starring W. David Hager, Sen. Henry Hyde, Neal Horsely, Randall Terry and more); Henry Hyde's Retirement Party; Grand Opening of the Official White House Corporate Brothel; Rove's Ass Under Probe

A human being is part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of
consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our
task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty... We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if
mankind is to survive.

From its title forward, Jon Katz's book Virtuous Reality places itself in distinct opposition to the unwieldy Book of Virtues compiled and promoted ad nauseam by reactionary pundit William Bennett. Slim where the Book of Virtues is fat, inexpensive where BoV is costly, original where Bennett's book is largely the work of others, and current where BoV is dated, Virtuous Reality is an outspoken guide on behalf of parents who wonder how to raise their children to be responsible adults, in the face of nearly constant opposition - both persuasive seductions and cries of alarm, both from and about media both new and old.

Kenneth L. Lay, Ex-Chairman of Enron, Dies
    The New York Times

    Wednesday 05 July 2006

Houston - Enron's founder and chairman, Kenneth L. Lay, died of a heart attack at his vacation home in Colorado, according to his spokeswoman.

"Ken Lay passed away early this morning in Aspen. The Lays have a very large family with whom they need to communicate. And out of respect for the family, we will release further details at a later time," Kelly L. Kimberly said in a statment this morning.

In May, Mr. Lay was found guilty on six counts of fraud and conspiracy and four counts of bank fraud. The former chief executive, Jeffrey K. Skilling, was convicted of 18 counts of fraud and conspiracy and one count of insider trading.

For years, Enron's gravity-defying stock price made it a Wall Street darling and an icon of the "New Economy" of the 1990's. But its sudden collapse at the end of 2001 and revelation as little more than a house of cards left Enron, with its crooked E logo, the premier public symbol of corporate ignominy. Investors and employees lost billions when Enron shares became worthless.

Enron's fall had a far greater impact than on just the energy industry by heightening nervousness among average investors about the transparency of American companies. "The Enron case and all the other scandals and cases that trailed after it may have finally punctured that romance with Wall Street that has been true of American culture for a while now," said Steve Fraser, a historian and author of "Every Man a Speculator: A History of Wall Street in American Life."

At Enron, Mr. Skilling was the visionary from the world of management consulting who spearheaded the company's rapid ascent by fastening on new ways to turn commodities, like natural gas and electricity, into lucrative financial instruments.

Mr. Lay, the company's founder, was the public face of Enron. Known for his close ties to President Bush's family, he built Enron into a symbol of civic pride and envy here in its hometown of Houston and throughout the financial world.

Priest who axed abortion clinic gets Elgin post

July 6, 2006

A priest who used an ax to hack up a Rockford medical clinic where abortions are performed has been assigned to a top position at an Elgin church.

The Rev. John P. Earl began serving July 1 as parochial administrator at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 272 Division St.

In an interview Wednesday, Earl declined to discuss his arrest and subsequent guilty plea for the attack on the Northern Illinois Women's Clinic.

Instead, he urged a reporter to begin an investigation into whether DNA from the "blood and guts'' found at abortion clinics matches the DNA of people who enter and leave the clinic. Until he sees such a report, Earl
said he had "no interest in talking to . . . any newspaper."

Scared off by owner's shotgun

Earl's entanglement with the law began Sept. 30, 2000, when he was arrested after he admitted to crashing his car into a garage at the clinic and using an ax to break doors, windows and surveillance cameras on the building, according to police reports. He was charged with two counts of criminal damage to property.

Earl never actually made it inside the medical office, which performs abortions. He stopped his attack after the building's owner fired two warning shots from a shotgun, the reports stated.

The clinic was closed at the time of the incident, and no one was injured.

Earl pleaded guilty to the charges Feb. 14, 2001, and was sentenced to 30 months of probation and ordered to pay restitution and fines.

The motive and timing for the attack were never specified, although it occurred two days after the federal government approved the RU-486 abortion pill and the day before scheduled abortion protests in Rockford.

At the time of the incident, Earl was a pastor in Rochelle. Since he pleaded guilty, he has been transferred twice -- first to Aurora and then
to Rockford, according to a receptionist at the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockford, which oversees churches in the area.

The receptionist said no diocese officials were available to comment about the reasons for Earl's assignment to Elgin.

Asked about his move to Elgin, Earl said Wednesday he was "happy to be here."

See you Sunday
